Tennessee lawmakers are considering legislation that would effectively ban abortions in the state, joining a growing number of states challenging constitutional protection of the procedure.

The state is holding hearings on Senate Bill 1236 Monday and Tuesday and will hear from more than 20 people and debate an 11-page amendment to the state’s fetal heartbeat bill, which stalled in the Tennessee Senate earlier this year.

If passed, the proposed amendment would ban abortions once “a viable pregnancy is presumed to exist or has been confirmed,” effectively banning all abortions once a woman discovers she is pregnant. […]
